Why is DisabledGo advertising jobs?

Quite simply because we were asked to by disabled people.

Disabled people were looking for inclusive employers targeting their jobs to disabled people. Disabled graduates were looking for companies who targeted their graduate positions to a disabled graduates and disabled students. DisabledGo Jobs provides a vehicle for inclusive employers targeting disabled jobseekers.

DisabledGo has town and city guides in nearly 50 locations across the UK with a user base across the whole country. In every area that we provide our service, we work closely with local disabled people. We do this in two main ways. Firstly, via our community involvement sessions where we plan how the local service will meet local needs by fully involving local disabled people. Secondly, after we have produced our access guide, we set up steering groups in each location. These steering groups are made up from ordinary disabled people and representatives from local disability groups. We meet with steering groups twice a year in each location where we work. Accordingly we have a very grass-roots approach to disability and a very 'real' understanding of what many disabled people would like to see happen.

A consistent and persistent theme at these steering groups was a request for job vacancies to appear on our site. When challenged with, "Why don't you look on other job websites?" the response has been, typically...

"number one - many employers still don't get it that as a disabled person I've got a lot to offer as a person, and number two, being a disabled person I have something extra to offer - my determination to succeed in a job once I get a chance. They just see my disability and count me out. If an employer advertises with DisabledGo then I can be more confident that they are not just ticking a box, but really do want me to apply for the job."

This view came up time and time again. As a social enterprise our mission is to empower disabled people. We do that best by listening to what disabled people say to us and then trying to deliver. That is the basis for DisabledGo Jobs.
